Ditch your elevator pitch. Zap your infomercial. And whatever you do, keep your carefully worded, painstakingly developed, positioning statement to yourself.
They may make you sound clever, but your elevator pitch, infomercial or positioning statement don’t exactly make for good conversations. Which is a shame, because last I checked, even a sales conversation is just that - a conversation.
So what can you say to a prospect sitting across the boardroom table, or someone you meet at a networking event or the beach bum in the next chaise longue? How can you start a conversation in a totally natural, familiar way that doesn’t sound like a sales pitch to the other person, doesn’t feel like a sales pitch to you, and yet increases your chance of getting your next referral or making your next sale?
Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as a magical phrase or headline that will make the other person want to buy your product or services - it just doesn’t exist.
What does exist, however, is an approach that will elicit interest from the other person so that he or she will want to engage you in a conversation. As a copywriter, I have adapted several copywriting styles and approaches for use in verbal conversations.
Here are three of my favorites.
#1 The Provocative Question
Chances are, you’ve seen this technique on websites, flyers and direct mail. It’s Copywriting for Direct Marketers 101, and it works just as powerfully in verbal conversations. In fact, it works so well that I’m surprised people don’t use it more often!
The best way to come up with a Provocative Question is to ask yourself the following:
“What question can I ask, such that the response from the other person allows me to say, ‘That’s what I do…’?”
The best Provocative Question pinpoints a problem or a symptom of a problem that the other person has. However, don’t get trapped into thinking that the problem has to be a big, generic problem that the category as a whole solves. It can be a small but nagging problem, or even a one that people have when they deal with your competitors.
Many people have a hard time coming up with Provocative Questions because, ironically, the most compelling ones are also the simplest and most obvious. Another thing that people have trouble with is answering a question with a question — when someone asks us a question, we’re wired to answer. What I am suggesting here is that you use that wiring to your advantage.
Here’s an example. When someone asks me what I do, I often answer back with a Provocative Question like this:
“Well let me ask you a question. When you go to a networking event or when you have to introduce yourself in public, how confident are you with the way you describe your business?
Almost every time, the person acknowledges that he or she doesn’t feel confident with the way they describe their business. In that moment, I have engaged the other person’s interest by presenting what I do in a way that’s personally meaningful to him or her. Then, what generally ensues is a conversation about the sales and marketing challenges they have and how I can help.
If, on the other hand, the person responds by saying that they’re totally confident with the way they describe their business, that’s cool too. I have two choices; I can either move on to another provocative question, (such as, ‘That’s great, do you get the response you want or would you like more people to ask for your business card, even in social situations?’), or I can talk about how being confident about the way you describe your business shows you have exceptional clarity the true value you offer to your clients — and how that’s the absolute most fundamental plank of your sales and marketing.
It’s all good — it’s all about having a conversation around an issue that’s both A) important to the other person, and B) related to a core challenge that you help your best clients solve.
#2 The Level-Setting Statement
If you’re a financial advisor, consultant, or in any other crowded profession where your prospects are very familiar with — perhaps even jaded about — the kind of work you do, this one’s for you.
The ‘level-setting statement’ is a universal statement that gets the other person nodding in agreement and then, WHAMMO! your point of difference hits them like a ton of bricks!
Here’s why it’s such a powerful technique. You can only be different in comparison to something else. That’s what the level-setting statement does it establishes what that something else is.
Here’s just one example from an event planner I worked with:
“There are five specific areas of expertise that are absolutely critical in major event planning. (Pause - and wait to see if the other person wants to know what they are.) While there are a lot of excellent event planners who can do a good job in one or two of them, it’s extremely unlikely that any one event planner would be an expert in all of them. Because I’ve been in the business for 15 years — on both the corporate as well as on the vendor side — I’ve developed a detailed planning process around each and every one. That’s what enables me to track and manage the myriad of details to guarantee a successful event.”
By stating the level-setting statement up front, you educate the other person about the industry you operate in, and establish a frame of reference that gives meaning to the differentiation you want to communicate.
You can use this approach to challenge an underlying assumption that people have about the industry, to illustrate a small but significant problem that generally annoys customers when dealing with your competitors, or anything else that allows you to highlight your solution.
Take a look at your own point of difference. Can you come up with a level-setting statement that will help you stand out even more?
#3 Address The Stereotype Head-on
You know how as soon as people discover you’re a _________________(insert your title here), they immediately form an impression about you that’s based on a stereotype?
Unfortunately, that stereotype is often negative.
For professions such as life insurance agents or used car salespeople, where the negative stereotypes run strong and deep, I recommend you address the stereotype head-on:
“If I tell you I’m a used car salesman, you’d probably think ‘plaid jacket guy who sells lemons to unsuspecting customers’, right?”
Pausing here is important here, because you want to give the listener time to move the image of the stereotype from the unconscious part of their brain to the conscious part. They might even want to chime in and give you their negative experience about dealing with ‘people like you’.
Perfect - now their guard is down. Now you can continue on to explain how your business, service or approach ‘fixes’ the problem that everyone else in your industry has created.
That’s your most compelling differentiator!
Stop selling! And start having real conversations!
Simple as it may seem, everything truly does start with a conversation. You’re not trying to tell your entire story, nor are you even trying to get the most important points out of your mouth first. All you want to accomplish is elicit interest from the other person; to have that person say, ‘tell me more’.
So don’t think of these as sales techniques - think of them as conversation starters.
The rest is up to you. If you are genuinely interested in helping the person you’re chatting with, chances are better than excellent you’ll finish with a referral or a sale.
Now go out and have some conversations!

Have you ever sat down and taken a good hard look at your finances?
I’m not just talking balancing the checkbook. I mean every single part of your finances. If you’ve never thought about it before — you should now. Think of it as a way to see where you are and where you are going. You could be surprised.
Start by simply writing down what your financial goals are. Do this without looking at your checkbook or savings accounts. Simply list what is important to you financially. This could be saving for retirement, paying off your debt or even working on a college savings fund for your children.
Now look at you checkbook, savings, budgeting (or lack of) and other financial accounts to see if you are on the right track. See how much debt you have paid off in the last year. If you haven’t been paying more than the minimum payments, you aren’t getting anywhere. You can really see this if you compare this monthly statement to last year’s monthly statement for your credit cards.
Or perhaps you do see that your investment accounts have grown appropriately. But maybe you’ve been putting too much into your children’s college funds and not enough into your retirement savings. Calculate how much you will need at retirement and assess whether or not you are on the right track.
Take the time to sit down and look over all of your insurance policies. Over time, many personal insurance needs change. It may be that you no longer need maternity coverage on your health insurance. Or perhaps you need to increase your term life insurance policy. Look at your homeowner’s insurance to see if you need to increase the personal property coverage or even the coverage amount on the home itself. Having the correct coverage can save you a lot of heartache and money in the case of an emergency or disaster.
Look at the changes in your life. Perhaps you’ve had a child or changed jobs. How do these events affect your money? You may need to change your budget, your savings or your investments.
Make sure that your finances are well protected. Everyone, whether or not they have children, should have a will. Review it regularly and update it as you have children or purchase long-term, big-ticket items.
Review your investments and make sure that they are performing as you need them and expect them to. As you grow older, you need to adjust the diversification of your investments to reflect a more conservative tactic. When reaching retirement, you don’t want to take any unnecessary risks with your money.
You should give your finances a complete checkup once or twice a year. The more you do it, the more you will see. Regular reviews of your finances also reinforce the importance of your goals. You will be less tempted to spend and motivated to save more for those things you want.

It seems like everywhere a person goes there is at least one person in view with a cell phone to their ear whether it is on the road, in a store, in a parking lot, walking down the street, etc. Even in places where cell phone usage is banned such as concert halls or movie theaters there is the occasional offender, or more likely, at least a few people using the text messaging feature on their phone.
Cell phone usage has exploded over the past decade and continues to rise. Nearly two hundred million people in the United States have cell phones and there are well over one billion users worldwide. That means there are a lot of phones sending their frequencies over the airwaves at any given time.
Concern has arisen over whether or not cell phone usage can harm a person’s health. Brain cancer rates in the United States have risen since cell phones were introduced, leading some people to wonder if cell phone usage is the reason for the increase.
There have been reports of people developing brain tumors in the exact same spot where they held their cell phone. Some studies have expressed concern over long-term cell phone use, believing it can lead to a person to develop cancer. That is not to say a person who uses a cell phone is going to get cancer, but some studies suggest long-term use increases a person’s risk.
Things may not be all gloom and doom however. A large study done in Denmark with almost a half million cell phone users showed no increase in cancer for cell phone users.
Yet, other studies have concluded there is a greater risk of cancer but only with analog phone users. Some other studies conclude that any type of cell phone usage can raise a person’s risk for developing cancer. There are a lot of varying opinions on the subject. According to the FDA, available data does not show there are definitely health problems associated with using wireless phones, but the information goes on to say that there is also no proof that wireless phones are completely safe either.
What about cell phone usage is causing the concerns and the numerous studies to be done? Cell phones emit radiation when they are used. The levels are low and are the same type of radiation as a microwave oven emits but in much smaller amounts.
It has been suggested that using hands free sets can alleviate the problem of the head being exposed to the radiation. Again opinions vary. Some studies say it does not decrease the amount of radiation exposure at all. Other studies say it significantly decreases the amount of radiation exposure.
Some people say the biggest danger with cell phones isn’t from the either real or perceived potential to develop cancer, but from inattentiveness while using the cell phone. How many of us have seen vehicles driving somewhat erratically down the road and then see when we get near the vehicle that the driver is talking on a cell phone. It is a proven fact that a driver on a cell phone is less attentive and more likely to get in an accident. And, hands free sets aren’t the answer that some people may believe. Yes, they free up both hands for driving and prevent a person from getting a sore arm, but the driver’s mind is still occupied with the conversation and therefore less attentive to what is going on around him or her on the road.
Even people who are walking and talking on a cell phone at the same time can put themselves in more danger because they are not as aware of what is going on around them.
All the conflicting reports make a person wonder what they should do. The good news is that more comprehensive studies are being done to see if cell phone usage does or does not cause cancer. At the same time, manufacturers are working on new processes that will decrease or even possibly eliminate a person’s radiation exposure. Until more definitive answers are given, a person may want to avoid talking on a cell phone for several hours every single day, but a person probably does not need to feel like they should have to give their cell phone up. It is still a great tool.
The advice about driving and talking on a cell phone is the same as it has been though. A person should pull over in a safe area out of traffic before engaging in a cell phone conversation.

Utility skins are unique because of their large basins and accessibility. These types of sinks are popular in work place environments. These sinks are capable of handling large jobs while not getting in the way. A utility sink is very similar to console sinks. While this model of skins sometimes provides a unique lavish style they are mainly used to get the work done. They are not always meant to look pretty. These types of sinks come in wall mounted models, under mounted models, and models that rest within a sink stand. They come in many different styles, shapes and colors. Their prices differ based on a number of different factors.
Utility rooms, laundry rooms, and other workplace environments often require some type of skin for many different reasons. For instance, an automobile mechanic will often get their hands dirty and need a place to wash them. That’s where utility skins come into play. They are often used to provide a place to clean something within looking pretty. In fact, many times these skins will rarely be washed since it is going to be placed in a workplace area meaning it will eventually get dirty again. Of course, these skins need to be durable and have a promising long life span.

According to one of the researches, it has been found that the smell and taste of cigarettes play a greater role in women’s smoking behavior than in that of men. Another study found that cognitive-behavioral therapy aimed at changing attitudes about weight promotes smoking cessation by women. Even if we compare their stats with men, we’ll be surprised to know that the guys who smoke are one out of every three. However, while smoking as well as smoking-related deaths from such diseases as lung cancer have been falling in men, they have been increasing in women. Smoking, in fact, takes a greater toll on the health of women than men; a smoking woman loses, on an average, 15 years of her life while a smoking man loses just over 13 years.
In the first half of the 20th century, lung cancer in women was extremely atypical. In addition to that smoking wasn’t very ubiquitous. Unfortunately, that soon changed when the tobacco industry started targeting women. In 1964, the first Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health was released and it became clear that smoking was a deadly habit which engulfed 45 percentages of women all over. A media campaign followed and smoking rates began to fall, as did tobacco industry profits. But the rates declined more in men than women; the tobacco industry had started their own media campaign, once again marketing directly to women.
Lung Cancer
By 1987, lung cancer had outdone breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths in women.
Today, more women die each year from lung cancer than breast cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancers combined. In fact, lung cancer among women is now considered a scourge, killing almost 75,000 in the US last year. Women appear to be more vulnerable to lung cancer than men, and they tend to get it at younger ages.
Symptoms of Lung Cancer
• Shortness of breath
• Fever with an unknown cause
• Hoarseness
• Chest pain
• Wheezing
• Coughing up blood
• Chronic cough
• Weight loss & loss of appetite
• Repeated bouts of bronchitis or pneumonia
Other Smoking influenced Diseases in Women
While lung cancer might be the most lethal disease caused by smoking, it’s not the only one. Smoking doubles the risk of having a heart attack, and increases the risk of dying from a heart attack within the first hour. This is an especially serious problem for women since women are more likely to die after a first heart attack than men. Women who use birth control pills; and smoke are at especially high risk of having a heart attack.
Smoking also increases the risk of other cancers, including breast, uterine cancer, bladder and oral cancer. Smoking also increases a woman’s risk of low bone density and osteoporosis.
Smoking-Related Disorders in Women
• Heart disease
• Stroke
• Lung cancer
• Emphysema
• Oral cancer
• Uterine cancer
• Breast cancer
• Bladder cancer
• Rectal cancer
• Colorectal polyps
• Osteoporosis
• Infertility
• Early Menopause
• Miscarriages
• Stillbirths
Family Matters
Smoking is not just bad for women; it’s bad for their families and future families as well. Smoking can cause infertility in women. If a woman becomes pregnant, smoking increases her risk of miscarriages, stillbirths and premature births. Mothers who smoke during pregnancy are also more likely to have babies with asthma, sleeping disorders and chronic ear infections than non-smoking mothers. The menstrual cycle phase has an effect on both mood and tobacco withdrawal symptoms for women trying to quit smoking — a finding that clearly suggests that women could improve their success rate simply by starting their quit attempt during certain days of their cycle.
Cosmetic and Other Considerations
Ironically, teens and young women often think smoking is sexy and glamorous. However, the consequences such as stained fingers and teeth, tooth loss, gum disease, bad breath are anything but sexy and glamorous. Smoking also hastens the aging process most likely because of its adverse effect on estrogen. It can cause early menopause, facial wrinkling, and permanent voice lowering and urinary incontinence.
Old Habits Die Hard
Women and girls are not only more susceptible than men to the negative consequences of smoking; they are more likely to become addicted to cigarettes even when smoking comparable amounts.
Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known to a man…and woman. Researchers are studying gender differences in smoking behavior and working to develop treatment plans that will help more women end their nicotine addiction. In fact, nicotine is considered more addictive than heroin or cocaine. And nicotine is more addictive for women than men.
The highly addictive nature of nicotine is a major reason why most people have difficulty quitting smoking, and women have a harder time quitting than men. Another thing that makes quitting difficult for women is the weight gain that, unfortunately, often accompanies quitting smoking. On the other hand, the weight gain, which rarely exceeds five pounds, can be reversed by a healthy diet and exercise.
More importantly, quitting smoking can also reverse many of the deadly consequences of the habit.
Weighing the Benefits
A woman who stops smoking reduces her risk of stroke to pre-smoking levels. Within a year, her smoking-related risk of heart disease drops by 50 percent. After three years, the risk of a heart attack is no greater than for a woman who never smoked. Within five years, her smoking-related risk of heart disease can disappear altogether. Clearly, the benefits of quitting outweigh the possibility of any weight gain. So think again…Are we going the right way?

For many, cool schools are not the colleges with the best football team but the one that will get them on the fast track to the career of their choice. Many find their best choice for this is online learning. Online learning can mean getting a degree in less time than expected and moving on and up in a career. Plus, the number of high tech features such as instant messenger, chat and webcam makes online learning pretty cool too. One can now attend a virtual classroom with fellow students from around the world. This is an all new turn for the education industry.
One will find these cool schools offer associate’s bachelor’s and even master’s degrees in a vast array of subjects. Computer technology, health care, business and paralegal studies are just a few of many degree programs that can be studied online. Some programs even allow working professionals to update their certifications when necessary. For those individuals who do not have the time or wherewithal to take on the hassle of an onsite college, online learning is always a best option. An accredited curriculum and degree means graduates will have a qualification that is readily accepted by employers.

Peace in the Middle East - whoa that is a toughie.
You have millennia of sheople being led around by the nose while abusing their mothers and daughters on both (or all eight or nine) sides of the issue and then there is all that oil that corpserists backing the US are in need of.
I suspect there needs to be real ecumenicism and the religions must be forced (which will require Bush or someone also admitting all religions say the same things) to say so. And then it will take years of re-programming before the land so full of holes and ass-holes begins to deserve any recognition as a Holy Land rather than a playground for Holy Empires.
Then I would suggest that we use Free Energy or alternative energy sources and begin making it clear there is an abundance of energy all around us. If we had to we could simply get Helium III from the moon for some purposes that the Tesla (Newman, Farnsworth, Fleischmann-Pons, Solar, Bearden and Vacuum etc) energy did not find application suitable to match the requirements. This would diffuse the arbitrageurs who love unrest more than a little and be detrimental to the oil cartels (Bushco).
Finally and most unlikely if people continue to believe the history they are taught in school - We must remove special status for people who hide behind corporate or national veils. It was only recently that corporations were given superior rights to any individual. At the same time we must reduce national interests while increasing local autonomy. The futurists like Toffler have been right about this happening in Europe but they could have explained why the plan set in motion in the 19th Century would lead to the EEC.
This same plan might be necessary if Nations are to continue in their present sovereign (derived from Kings who were said to be Divine) status. I would hope that will not happen but it is apparent in the words of Woolsey and Bennett that it is the plan. It is in fact the way that Kissinger Associates have laid out the NSS document that George II calls a War on Terra.
On the other hand if people started learning the Hegelian Dialectic of history - then real change could occur. Then standing armies would be outlawed and women would be free. How can people be educated about all the lies of Nations and leaders and yet still have some hope for mankind?”

So you know you’re going on vacation. You know you need to find a good hotel that isn’t going to break the bank. You figure that you can use the internet to find that perfect hotel choice, but what’s the best way to go about finding it online? Read on for some tips for making your online research most profitable.
In the first place, I am assuming you’ve chosen a destination for your vacation. Unless the price of the hotel will be one of the factors that will help you choose between two vacation alternatives, you’ll most likely know where you are going. With this information, you’ll want to start your search at one of the main search engines online. Your choices will be either Google, Yahoo or MSN.
The most basic hotel search you could do would be to enter your destination along with either the keyword hotel or motel. So if you are going to Orlando, Florida, you’d enter a search like ‘Orlando Florida Hotel’. This kind of search will give you a list of websites that either are hotels or are listing hotels worth checking out.
When making a search, it is important to be creative with your keyword selections. Instead of simply typing in something like ‘Orlando Florida Hotel’, you will want to try other combinations. One good way to get a quality list of hotels is to type in the name of some of the attractions you plan on visiting in the city you’ve chosen. To continue with our example of Orlando, you could use ‘Universal Studios Orlando Hotel’. This will help you to find listings that are near Universal Studios.
Don’t be afraid of using Hotel directories to help you scope out a good potential match. For our example city, using an
Orlando Hotel directory could yield just the right hotel for your needs. Many of these directories include either reviews and maps on their site or easy to find links to these kinds of resources.
Finally, when doing searches with a search engine, try to think of different ways you can say the same thing. Don’t just search for Orlando hotel but search for Orlando motel, Orlando accommodation, Orlando vacation spot and so on. Substitute your intended city destination for Orlando in these example.
Using these techniques and a little time to explore the hotel websites, there is no reason that you can’t find that perfect hotel at the price you expect.

Weight Watchers inspired me to change my eating habits, lose weight, exercise and, indirectly, learn to cook healthy and incredibly delicious food.
Now, I’m not affiliated in any way to the organisation, and I am not in their payroll. In fact, I am no longer going to Weight Watchers, and I am not even suggesting that you should join too. But I am telling you this because it will explain how the system worked for me, and why, and - after getting appropriate medical advice - you may wish to consider it too.
I first became seriously interested in losing weight when I reached the 99.9 kg mark (220 lb) in June 2003, with a hight of 1.67 cm (5′6”).
Several years ago I had done the Scarsdale diet and managed to lose about 10 kg, but only managed to keep slim for about 6 months.
After that I tried that diet (and several others) several times but to no avail. The diets were too harsh, and although I would lose weight one week, I would double the loss the following week. I was doing the “yo-yo” diet.
In 2003, after a friend of mine told me that I looked “prosperous”, I decided it was time to do something in respect of my physical well being and followed the Anthony Robbins’ formula of success:
- Know what you want to achieve
- Find out where you are in relation to that goal
- Find out who has done it, and how
- Follow the same steps, vary them according to your circumstances, and keep trying till you get to your goal.
I did a bit of research about the different weight loss methods out there, and somehow I decided to give Weight Watchers a go.
Weight Watchers has been around, but it has been until very recently that they developed a special “Points” system, which consists of assigning a point-value to foods based on the amount of kilo joules, fat and (in theory) the amount of fibre each food contains. All this is estimated by using a patented formula.
Depending on you height, weight and gender, you can have a certain amount of food points a day. If you stick to that number of points, you lose weight, gradually and safely.
You are therefore encouraged to “watch what you eat” (hence the name “Weight Watchers”), by keeping track of whatever you consume.
But counting your points is only a part of the whole system Weight Watchers offer. The real value of the program is that:
- It educates you as to how food works in relation to your weight
- It keeps you focused on your goal by requiring you that you attend to a weekly meeting to record your weight, and to share your experiences with other members.
- It gives you access to a large number of foods, recipe books, and other tools that will help you stick to your goals.
But Weight Watchers does not only focus on what you eat, and how much. It also teaches you to exercise to “burn” extra points to accelerate your weight loss, or to allow you the freedom to eat certain treats.
You could say that Weight Watchers’ Pure Points system teaches you to “budget” your meals, without having to worry about calories or amount of fat per portion.
But what I love best of Weight Watchers is that you learn to cook healthy and delicious food. This, alone, makes it easier to stick to your weight loss goals because the food is delicious, and you discover how easy is to gradually include healthy food into your life.
If you would like to how many points you need in order to lose weight following the Points system, click here to read The Tao of Weight Watchers Part 2.
