Background to Mobile Broadband USB Dongles in the United Kingdom

Filed under: School of Technology, Telecommunication Parlor — admin @ 12:08 am

Have you ever felt tied to some place with unpredictable access to the web? Well then the mobile broadband dongle may be just what you’ve been looking for. The dongle lets you access the net, check emails and discuss online just as you would with a regular net link. A mobile broadband dongle is a USB gadget that you can insert into the netbook to get broadband connectivity thru the mobile spectrum. The mobile dongle provides extreme convenience due to its little size and long set of features.

- Very portable. The dongle can be simply pocketed and carried away with you.
- High speed net. 3G dongles can achieve bandwidths of up to 7.3 Mbps akin to the normal landline broadband modems.
- Achieve broadband speeds without wires.
- Compatible with a range of PCs and operating systems. The same dongle can be used on many PCs though not at the same time.
- Straightforward to link up. Just plug in the SIM card into the dongle and plug it into the computer.
- Connect to the net without disrupting the phone call.
- Can be used anywhere while busy, as long as there is network access.

Dongles were initially conceptualized as hardware locks for software. These dongles would fit into the serial ports of the PC and prevent unauthorized access to secure software. Although hardware dongles are not used so much these days, the term has remained and is commonly used to refer to devices that operate thru the computers ports.

Though many types of tariffs exist for mobile broadband, they can be broadly categorized as :
- Contracts which extend for a specific time period and require regular payments to be made over that whole contract.
- PAYG (pay as you go) where you are required to pay only for your use. Pay monthly for whatever capacity you want or alternatively pay for an agreed volume of data to download.

Technology is fast making the most unlikely happen by offering new levels of portability and speed. With PC manufacturers bundling mobile broadband access in their hardware, this approach definitely seems to be paving the trail for future net technology. Though mobile broadband faces tough competition from Wi-Fi, it is unquestionably at an advantage due to its simple setup and fantastic portability. Not only for business users but also for regular day-to-day use, mobile broadband is definitely a must have nowadays.

VoIP Services: Stay in Touch from Anywhere

Filed under: Telecommunication Parlor — admin @ 4:13 pm

Most people find it difficult to make a call to their relatives and friends from other countries. One of the main reasons is the high cost of the calls and several communications hurdles.

But through the innovation of VoIP, the world has become a smaller place and those hurdles aren’t nearly as high.

When it comes to VoIP telecommunication services, there are lots of benefits that can be used as an asset by the user.

VoIP has many services like unlimited local and long distance calling. Not only that, there are also features that makes VoIP even more useful, like caller ID, Find Me, Call Waiting and many more.

There is some talk, and rumors circulating that the quality of VoIP service is not clear compared to traditional phone service. There are also some claims that the quality of calls is not much better than cellular services. But apparently the companies that are making these claims about VoIP admitted that there is no communication delay when speaking on a VoIP phone.

How does VoIP services work?

To make things simple, a VoIP service enables the caller to use high speed internet connection. This connection is also known as broadband. The broadband connects the caller to the designated recipient by using the Internet.

VoIP services can call anyone provided that the designated location has a phone. The person that the users wants to talk with does need to have a VoIP phone of their own. As long as they have a phone and a phone number of course, they can be contacted by the VoIP services.

The VoIP provider will reduce voice and convert it digitally in order to pass through several channels. The digitized voice, as it passes through the channel, will be sent over the Internet.

The digitized voice will then be put back together to get through the receiving end. It would be the time that the receiver will hear and understand the digitized voice and finally start their conversation.

By this way, the VoIP user can minimize the long distance call rate because of the use of Internet. Taxes and other extra rates are deductable. As a matter of fact, it cuts out the rate carriers totally.

The quality of voice transmission is actually outstanding, clear and deliberate. It surpasses traditional phone services in quality and most importantly in affordability.

What are the tools to make use of VoIP Services?

• One of the most vital equipment is the internet connection. The internet connection should be fast and accurate.

• Another tool is a broadband cable router that will permit the user to transmit the voice to the internet. It is also responsible for splitting the internet connection.

• A VoIP applicable telephone set.

• A phone transmitter device. Normally the VoIP supplier provides it.

The tools will be constructed this way: The Internet connection from the computer will gather the voice from the user. After that, the voice will hook up to the router which connects to the provided phone converter. The routers will connect the voice to the regular phone.

As you can see, the mechanical aspect of the VoIP can be somewhat complex, but because of further innovations, the VoIP system providers have made it simple and effortless.

Nowadays, VoIP service can be set up in 5 minutes. VoIP is certainly the key for fast, accurate and cheap long distance calls.

We Have Outgrown Our dedicatedT1

Filed under: Business Performance, Telecommunication Parlor — admin @ 3:24 pm

When our company (who processes a lot of large medical images) was growing fast, it became evident that we required more bandwidth. Our T1 line just wasnt cutting it any longer (T1 bandwidth is only 1.5 Mbps). We had to upgrade to something bigger .

As head of the IT department, I was the one renegotiating our existing contract. Fortunately our company’s 1 year contract was almost over, so our company was in the position to shop around for different alternatives.

The most apparent solution was to go from a single t1 to a bonded T1. However it would not take long before that also would not be sufficient.

Our sales rep with this carrier (who will remain nameless here) was happy to recommend a bigger and far more high-priced solution:ds3 bandwidth (T3 line) with a capacity of 45 mb. This is surely enough taking our projected growth into consideration, it was possibly even a bit of an overkill. And the cost per month was in the higher 4 digit figures…

I found something that sounded too good to be true. A new technology (or at least new to me) that can deliver bandwidth via an Ethernet port over plain old telephone lines, also called Ethernet over Copper. The pricing was super; we were able to get a 10 meg port for less than a bonded t-1!

And another major advantage of carrier ethernet bandwidth is the scalability. We can just add bandwidth by simply ordering more, in incremental steps, even all the way up to a gigabit Ethernet circuit.

So when upgrading any services, be sure to shop around with several providers and make sure you are aware of new technologies (or use a telecommunications consultant that is).

Hotel Wi-Fi Prices Not Guests Friendly

Filed under: Consumers Den, School of Technology, Telecommunication Parlor — admin @ 12:47 pm

Renowned travel website Expedia.co.uk has appealed to the hotels to consider decreasing their Wi-Fi broadband charges for their guests. The company’s communications director, Alison Couper has said that hotels across Europe and UK charge heavily for internet access, and only the budget hotels offer the travellers with low priced or free Wi-Fi broadband.

Ms. Couper said that in the technology driven 21st century, access to web while travelling should be affordable and easy, while it is currently expensive and complicated. She also mentioned that if a traveller wishes to reduce his travel budget for web access, then dropping a couple of stars off the hotel’s rating might be a good idea.

According to a research report by Expedia, the hotels with four stars or less rating were the ones to provide free of cost Wi-Fi service. Across the world, Wi-Fi broadband prices for one hour varied from £0.78 in Florida, U.S to £6.43 in Venice, Italy. The report also observes that comparisons of Wi-Fi charges across hotels are rendered difficult owing to the variable pricing structures adopted. Some hotels charge on hourly or half-hourly basis, while others charge for a time bound usage or have flat daily rates.

Expedia has advised both business and holiday travellers to check for hotels with business centres. The ones with business centres have been found to have a higher likelihood of offering free Wi-Fi broadband as well.
